Why You Need A Retirement Day

Why You Need A Retirement Day

On a random Tuesday in November I took a day trip to the Oregon Coast with 3 other entrepreneurs.

There was no event, no workshop, no other reason than to experience joy, adventure, relaxation and connection.

It felt AMAZING.

My friend Yasmin Nguyen takes leaders on Retirement Days and helps them create a practice to incorporate more freedom and joy into their lives on a regular basis.

Simple in theory.
Hard in practice. (At least at first.)

I found that I was justifying taking the whole day off by saying ti was for business. I mean Yasmin and I needed to chat biz and collaboration.  Right?!

Why couldn't I just take this day for me with no ulterior motive and be ok with that?

How to work with your spouse and still love them

How to work with your spouse and still love them

When people hear that I’ve worked side by side with my husband EVERY. SINGLE. DAY for eight years they either cringe or tilt their head in a long blissful sigh.  The reality is somewhere in the middle.

It takes a certain kind of relationship that 1) wants to be together that much and 2) can withstand working together everyday, and then go home and have dinner together.

Every.
Dam.
Day.

It is not for everyone, and even those that choose it will encounter bumps in the road (sometimes they feel like mountains).

Once the bliss of deciding to take the second plunge together wears off how do you ensure you still love each other at the end of each day?

Six Steps To Hire The Right Person + Worksheet

Six Steps To Hire The Right Person + Worksheet

It drives me crazy when people take forever to make a decision.  But even I get caught doing it.

Last week I shared with you about my search for a nanny. I’ve been in full swing interview mode and am about to make an offer to someone.  Hiring is a great life skill.  My nanny search reminded me that your professional life isn’t the only time you have to use these skills.

As with any skill, it becomes rusty when you don’t use it. I’ve been brushing off the cobwebs and getting fast and efficient at assessing candidates. How do you cut through the BS and hire the right person for a job?

All these interviews brought on a flood of memories from my days of owning a cafe and coffee roaster. Being a seasonal employer, I hired over 100 people in the eight years of owning that business (Yikes!).   Some positions were salaried full time managers, some hourly baristas.  There are key things that span all positions when hiring to get the best person for the job.

Childcare - The Struggle To Juggle Kids And Business

Childcare - The Struggle To Juggle Kids And Business

I’m at a place I’ve been numerous times in my short life as a Mom. I’m in need of childcare.

Again.

As a Mother F’ing Preneur (MFP), I love my work.  I also love that I’ve had the flexibility to work from home in between naps and nursing with baby #3, Sam.  He’s now almost eight months old and I’m feeling twitchy to work more.

Just because I had a baby, doesn’t mean that all those crazy, exciting, ridiculous ideas I had about my business have dried up.  The list of what I want to do just keeps getting longer and if I don’t take action soon I may explode.

Can A Mom Have A Miracle Morning? Part 1

Can A Mom Have A Miracle Morning? Part 1

When you say “Miracle Morning”, what exactly do you mean and how miraculous are we talking about?

I’m referring to “The Miracle Morning” by Hal Elrod that outlines a routine for you to follow to “transform your life” and “reach your goals”.

I first heard about this book on the Smart Passive Income podcast and was intrigued.   Here is a snippet from the book’s Amazon description:

What if you could wake up tomorrow and any—or EVERY—area of your life was beginning to transform? What would you change? The Miracle Morning is already transforming the lives of tens of thousands of people around the world by showing them how to wake up each day with more ENERGY, MOTIVATION, and FOCUS to take your life to the next level. It’s been right here in front of us all along, but this book has finally brought it to life.

Are you ready? The next chapter of YOUR life—the most extraordinary life you've ever imagined—is about to begin. It’s time to WAKE UP to your full potential…"

I mean really, how do you say “Hmm, Naaa.  I’m not interested.”?  I’ll tell you how.  You love sleep.  And you have little children that are already disrupting your sleep.  So the idea of waking up earlier than you have to, is awful.

But all those words!

Promising amaaaaaazing things.

They keep gnawing on the the back of my mind, saying that I should really give it a shot.

But the damn kids.  Especially that cute infant, only 5 months old.  He’s just so hungry, wanting to nurse again and again!  And now I’m entering the teething stage.  He sleeps ok, typically waking up 1 - 2 times per night.  But sometimes there are awful nights where he is fussy and up all the time and there is no way of predicting.

Change is in the Air

Change is in the Air

I’m sitting on the deck at my parents house, beautiful July morning, looking out onto bright blue Lake Superior, dotted with Madeline Island and Long Island.   As of about 9 am this morning the most valuable thing I own is my 2006 Prius.  I’m setting the bar fairly low in terms of using the word “valuable”, though I really love my car.

Ten months ago I had a commercial mortgage, a few business loans, a house loan and owned a second car.  But the last of those items, our house, has been sold as of this morning.

It is incredibly liberating and freeing to not be tethered to a place or institution.

We are moving our family out west.  My husband, Jon is on the road with said Prius driving to Oregon from Wisconsin.  I am flying there with the three kids in 5 days.

The Most Powerful Word You Need To Use More

The Most Powerful Word You Need To Use More

We’re all told to be positive.  It is good for you in so many ways. Well F@#& that.

Ha!  Just kidding; I'm one of those annoying eternal optimists!

But there is one word that you positively need to say more in your business.

No.

It is a very powerful word. I realize it comes across as a “negative”.  As women we often say yes to way too much (especially us friendly and unoffending midwesterners).  It feels rude to say no.

Even my assertive self still had this midwestern inclination to say yes to everyone.  Until I started saying no….

When I owned a coffee roaster and cafe we were constantly bombarded by ideas to "help grow our business".   We had numerous areas that brought in revenue; coffee drinks, beans, bakery, made to order food, wholesale, and online sales.  We were pulled in too many directions and didn't have energy to do all the areas well.

We decided to complete our business roadmap and do an in depth look at what our business was and what we wanted it to become.  It brought some interesting things to light.

The Heart of Your Business

The Heart of Your Business

Your business has a Heart. When I look up the word heart there are two definitions.  One is the innermost or central part of anything.  Another definition is spirit, courage or enthusiasm.  Your business has both.

Identifying the Heart of your business is one of the most important things you can do.  Once done, you can focus your energy and make decisions based on this one thing.

What is the heart of your business?

Entrepreneur: Nature Vs. Nurture?

Entrepreneur: Nature Vs. Nurture?

I love podcasts.  I used to say things like “I heard this thing on NPR…” and all my friends nodded like bobbleheads because they heard the same thing too. Now the conversation starts,  “I heard this amazing podcast the other day…”

Friends often ask me when I have time to listen to podcasts.  Hmmm when do I fit that in?  Doing dishes and laundry folding are classic times.  Listening helps ease the pain of two things I absolutely hate.  If I play them loud enough I drown out the kids whining.   Unfortunately I do miss some content because of the interruptions, but something is better than nothing.

In addition to my obsession with StartUp, which feels like the love child of my favorite biz podcasts and NPR, I’m really diggin’ ZenFounder.

Zen Founder is a husband and wife team talking about how to stay sane while launching your startup.   This clearly appeals to me because Jon and I have owned a business together for eight years and have had three kids in the last five.  I need all the sanity tips I can get!
